Chapter 1: The Value of Repurposing Your Content

Understanding Content Repurposing and How to Transform Existing Blog Posts, Podcasts, Newsletters, and Social Media Into a Book

As entrepreneurs, coaches, and business owners, content creation is often one of our biggest challenges. We’re expected to consistently produce fresh, valuable content that speaks to our audience’s needs, helps us build authority, and, ultimately, drives sales. When I talk to other entrepreneurs they say that when they get to the place where they can afford to hire someone, the first task that they are going to delegate is social media and content creation complaining that this is the most time consuming portion of their business that robs them of time for themselves, with their families and friends and makes it virtually (pun intended) impossible for them to ever step away from their business. They feel eternally chained to their phones and their social media accounts just to feel like their business is going to succeed. I like numbers so I ran the numbers on this:

The time, money, and resources that entrepreneurs, business owners, and online coaches spend on content creation can vary widely depending on their goals, the scale of their business, and the type of content they are producing so this is a general breakdown of what the average entrepreneur is spending on content:

1. Time Spent on Content Creation

Content creation is more than just creating a reel and posting it. It involves multiple stages: planning, production, editing, publishing, and engagement. Each stage takes different amounts of time to produce a 30 sec- 2 minute reel. Here's a breakdown of the time commitment:

Average Time per Piece of Content

  • Social Media Posts (Image, Carousel, Text-based): 30 minutes to 1 hour per post. This includes planning, writing, design, and scheduling. If you're using tools like Canva or Adobe Spark for design, this could speed up the process.

  • Short-form Video (TikToks, Reels, YouTube Shorts): 1 to 3 hours per video. This includes filming, editing, captioning, and publishing. Short-form videos require fast-paced editing and often multiple takes, which can add time.

  • Long-form Video (YouTube, Webinars): 4 to 8 hours per video. Long-form content requires more planning (scripting, storyboarding), production (filming, lighting, audio), and post-production (editing, thumbnail creation).

  • Blogs or Articles: 2 to 5 hours per blog post, depending on research depth, writing, and SEO optimization.

  • Live Streams and Webinars: 3 to 10 hours, including preparation, rehearsals, actual stream time, and post-event follow-up.

  • Engagement and Community Building: Entrepreneurs and coaches often spend 1–2 hours a day engaging with followers, answering questions, and fostering relationships. This time is typically spread out throughout the day.

Total Time Spent per Month

For an average entrepreneur or coach posting 50–100 pieces of content per month:

  • Low-end (Less frequent content): Around 50–75 hours per month!!!!

  • High-end (Consistent content production): 100–200 hours per month. This can easily scale if they produce more complex content (e.g., long-form YouTube videos, podcasts, or highly produced webinars).

2. Money Spent on Content Creation

Tools and Software

  • Design Tools (Canva, Adobe Suite, etc.): Most entrepreneurs spend around $10–$50 per month on graphic design tools. High-end users might use Adobe Creative Cloud for $50–$80/month.

  • Video Editing Software (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, etc.): Costs here vary, but most business owners will spend $20–$100/month on video editing software, depending on the complexity and whether they hire someone to do it.

  • Social Media Management Tools (Hootsuite, Buffer, Later, etc.): Subscription costs can range from $15–$200/month, depending on the number of platforms and features needed (advanced analytics, multiple users, scheduling).

  • Email Marketing (Mailchimp, ConvertKit, etc.): Entrepreneurs often use email marketing software for nurturing leads, costing anywhere from $10–$300/month based on list size and feature needs.

  • Stock Photos and Music: If using stock images or music for content, this could cost $10–$50 per month for subscriptions (e.g., Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Envato Elements).

  • Web Hosting & Domain: Many coaches and business owners host their own websites, which typically costs $10–$50 per month for basic hosting and domain fees.

Content Creation Outsourcing Costs

  • Freelancers/Agencies: Many entrepreneurs hire external help to handle content creation or management, which increases costs. For example:

    • Freelance Copywriters: $50–$200 per blog post or piece of copy.

    • Freelance Video Editors: $100–$500 per video, depending on the length and complexity.

    • Graphic Designers: $50–$150 per design (e.g., social media posts, infographics).

    • Social Media Managers: $500–$3,000 per month, depending on the number of platforms, posting frequency, and engagement management.

Total Monthly Budget for Content Creation

  • Low-budget creators: Typically spend $100–$500 per month on tools, software, and minor outsourcing (e.g., hiring a freelance designer once in a while).

  • Mid-range creators: Can spend between $500–$2,000 per month on a combination of tools, social media management, email marketing, and some outsourced tasks (freelance writers, video editors).

  • High-budget creators: Can invest $2,000–$10,000+ per month, especially if they outsource a significant portion of content creation (full-time videographers, copywriters, social media managers, etc.), plus they may run paid ad campaigns.

3. Resources Used

In terms of resources, entrepreneurs typically rely on the following:

Human Resources:

  • Full-time/Part-time Employees: Larger businesses or high-earning coaches might hire full-time social media managers, content creators, or marketing specialists. This can cost $2,500–$7,000 per month depending on the role and experience.

  • Outsourcing: Many entrepreneurs outsource tasks like video editing, graphic design, or copywriting to freelancers. These costs can vary based on the freelancer’s experience and the project size.

Physical Resources:

  • Cameras and Equipment: Many entrepreneurs invest in cameras, microphones, lights, and other gear. This can range from a $200 entry-level setup to $2,000–$5,000+ for professional-grade equipment.

  • Props and Locations: If creating high-quality videos or photos, business owners may invest in sets, props, and even renting spaces for specific shoots. Costs here can range from $50–$500 per month, depending on frequency.

Time Investment in Learning & Experimentation:

  • Skill Development: Many entrepreneurs spend time learning video editing, content writing, or social media strategies, often through online courses or self-taught methods. This could be 10–20 hours per month.

  • Experimentation and Testing: Entrepreneurs often allocate time and resources to test different types of content (A/B testing posts, running ads, analyzing analytics). This process can be time-consuming and lead to additional expenses if running paid campaigns.

Estimated Total Investment Per Month

For a small-to-medium business owner or coach:

  • Time: 50–100 hours per month.

  • Money: $200–$2,000/month depending on tools, resources, and outsourcing.

  • Human Resources: Either doing it all themselves or outsourcing certain aspects (freelance help).

For a larger business with a dedicated marketing team:

  • Time: 150–250 hours per month (team effort).

  • Money: $2,000–$10,000+ per month.

  • Human Resources: Full-time staff, contractors, or agencies.

These numbers are alarming! Did I read that right?! Small businesses are spending an average of 50-100 hours per month creating content!!!! No wonder businesses shut down before they even start making money! No wonder entrepreneurs feel like they are drowning in a never ending sea of “to-do’s”, no wonder they leave their dream of owning a business to go back to corporate because they actually feel like they are getting part of their life back! Imagine having even a fraction of that time back?! Imagine taking even 10 hours a month back for yourself or to spend with your family?!
